Where is the line and how do you handle it?

In the church we have been told to avoid crossing the line at all costs. Kind of like the fence in the hill. Therefore, if there ever a situation that had a questionable outcome, most church members would return to the mindset of avoid the line at all possibilities. However, that may sometimes have adverse effect.
But there was a different idea posed. If you avoid a sitaution at all costs, you miss the opportunity to learn. If you just run away how are you supposed to handle a bigger situation later that you can't run away from? I know I can't cross the line, but how do you not run away from the line and still not cross it? Or is the idea of face your fears and over come reasonable? Or am I just rationalizing?

  1. When I think of 'the line' I think of standards and in that case I say, why flirt with the line? Set your standard and live it. You are talking of something else though and I am having a hard time understanding what exactly the line is you may be talking about...or are you mixing the two ideas?
Yes you should avoid situations that put you in bad places. That is not to say run away from them when if you happen to find yourself in one that means if you know where one is going to be, stay away. If you happen into one I would say do your best to get out. And that is where growth comes from; you overcome as you find your way out of a bad situation.

  2. This wasn't the situation I was thinking of when I started but I think this will work fine.

Growing up, I had a not so great life. I was not in the church for a good bit of my teen years and I feel like I did some pretty bad stuff. But because I have been through hard times, and not had the church I more fully understand the need for the gospel. I have more of an apperciation for the gospel in my life and try harder to keep it alive in my life. I have seen many many people that grow up in the church, sheltered by there parents, away from that line, and when times get tough, they fall. They never got a good, personal root in the gospel. Now, I'm not sure where I was going with that, but. I'm not saying you have to cross the line to overcome and grow the most. But because I was so close to that line and overcome yes, growth took place. But those that were so far away, it doesn't take much to pull them in. I feel kind of like you need to build up a resistence. If a child doesn't know how to swim and is scared of drowning, yeah they can stay far away from a pool, the line, and never drown, cross the line. But then they never learn to swim, overcome the line. By getting in the pool anyway and learning to swim, close to the line, do they overcome and learn to swim and don't drown. But if they are one to never go never water, if they are then thrown in and never learned to swim, they are more then likely going to drown.
